2021 Annual Meeting

AAPM 2021: Effective Pain Care is Multimodal

The AAPM Annual Meeting is the must-attend meeting of the year for the entire pain care team. It brings together specialists of varying modalities and disciplines to address evidence-based, innovative best practices that treat the whole patient through multimodal and multidisciplinary approaches. AAPM 2021 will provide attendees with the skills and knowledge necessary to more fully incorporate multimodal pain care efficiently and effectively into their practices.

2020 has been an unprecedented year, with the COVID-19 pandemic impacting every aspect of our professional and personal lives. For us in the pain medicine field – this public health crisis came as we continue to combat the persisting public health problems of chronic pain and the opioid epidemic.

I am proud of our specialty for rising to meet these challenges in order to continue delivering care through ingenuity, commitment, and grit. The pandemic has shown an even brighter light on why multimodal approaches are crucial to the treatment of acute and chronic pain, and no other medical specialty has as much command of these modalities as we do.

AAPM 2021 will offer us the much-needed opportunity to convene and share what we have learned and experienced this past year as we continue to reshape the delivery of pain care in a post-COVID-19 world.

-AAPM President, Ajay Wasan, MD MSc

AAPM 2021 will be held, this spring, in a virtual format, on dates still to be determined.

The meeting will highlight critical components of multidisciplinary care, including:

  • Academic and research
  • Acute pain/preventing transition to chronic pain
  • Basic & translational science
  • Cancer pain
  • Diagnostics and imaging sciences
  • Integrative and transdisciplinary care
  • Pain treatment for special patient populations
  • Pharmacotherapies
  • Physical and behavioral therapies
  • Practice management
  • Pro/con debate
  • Procedural and surgical interventions

In 2016, an estimated 20.4% of U.S. adults had chronic pain and 8.0% of U.S. adults had high-impact chronic pain (according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), making it one of the most important public health problems of our time both in terms of the number of patients affected and the impact on healthcare costs. Pain medicine specialists know that employing a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach to pain management means staying abreast of the latest and most up to date complementary and integrative pain management therapies, interventional therapies, neuromodulation, rehabilitative therapies, medical therapies, and the latest technical innovations, especially while we as a specialty and a nation continue to grapple with the opioid crisis. Meeting sessions will focus on the theme Innovation & Technology in Pain Medicine and will address topics such as:

  • Procedural and surgical pain management interventions, applying image-guided, minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat pain conditions
  • Complementary and integrative mechanisms for treating pain
  • Non-pharmacological pain management treatments, including physical and behavioral therapies
  • Interactive patient care technologies to better manage pain expectations and perceptions, including a focus on caring for special populations, such as cancer patients, adolescents, and veterans
  • Bringing research into practice and the latest basic and translational science in the field of pain
  • Practice management tips and tools regarding regulatory, fiscal, and legal/ethical issues.

Disclosure of Conflicts of Interest

It is the policy of AAPM to plan and implement educational activities in accordance with the ACCME to ensure balance, independence, objectivity, and scientific rigor. As an ACCME-accredited provider, AAPM may receive commercial support from industry providers but does not receive guidance, either nuanced or direct, on the content of the activity or on who should deliver the content.

As an ACCME-accredited provider, AAPM must demonstrate that everyone who is in a position to control the content of an education activity has disclosed all relevant financial relationships with any commercial interest. Relevant financial relationships are defined as financial relationships with any commercial interests in any amount occurring within the past 12 months that create a conflict of interest. A commercial interest is any entity producing, marketing, re-selling, or distributing health care goods or services, used on, or consumed by, patients. Providers of clinical service directly to patients are NOT commercial interests. Employees of commercial interests are ineligible to submit an educational session proposal for consideration.

Financial relationships are those relationships in which the individual benefits by receiving a salary, royalty, intellectual property rights, consulting fee, honoraria for promotional speakers’ bureau, ownership interest (e.g., stocks, stock options or other ownership interest, excluding diversified mutual funds), or other financial benefit. Financial benefits are usually associated with roles such as employment, management position, independent contractor (including contracted research), consulting, speaking and teaching, membership on advisory committees or review panels, board membership, and other activities from which remuneration is received, or expected. 2019 Commercially Supported Symposia

2019 Commercially Supported Symposia

The following Commercially Supported Symposia (CSS) held during the AAPM 35th Annual Meeting & Preconferences March 7-9, 2019 offered meeting attendees an opportunity to expand their pain management knowledge and gain insight into the important topics and issues facing today’s pain specialists.

Recognition and Management of Migraine in an Era of Expanding Options for Acute Treatment and Prevention

Migraine, a common neurovascular brain disorder, represents a severe and widespread health problem. In recent years a number of novel therapies for the acute treatment and prevention of migraine have been developed. These include centrally acting serotonin (5HT1F) agonists and therapies directed against the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) ligand and its receptor. During this PeerView Live lunch symposium, after briefly reviewing how migraine can be identified in clinical practice, experts in the management of this neurologic disorder will discuss the latest data on emerging therapies for the acute treatment of migraine, assess current data on approved and emerging anti-CGRP monoclonal antibodies for migraine prevention, and highlight key considerations for using these therapies in clinical practice.

Educational Objectives

  • Apply established screening tools and criteria for migraine diagnosis in clinical practice.
  • Identify data on the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of established and emerging therapeutics for the acute treatment of migraine.
  • Cite updated evidence on available and emerging therapies for the prevention of migraine.
  • Employ strategies to integrate emerging therapies for acute treatment and headache prevention into personalized management plans for patients with migraine if/when these agents are approved in the future.

This activity is supported by an educational grant from Lilly.

The Long Lasting Impact of a Short Conversation About Opioid Overdose Risks

Despite mounting concern and efforts to address opioid overdose in the United States, death rates involving prescription opioids have not abated. This statistic highlights missed opportunities for clinicians to intervene to help save lives. Numerous government agencies and professional organizations recommend that clinicians co-prescribe take-home naloxone with opioids for at-risk patients as a precaution to help prevent opioid overdose deaths. While it is necessary to first identify patients at risk of an opioid overdose, just as important is engaging in conversations that can help save patients’ lives. The faculty will model a brief and impactful conversation with patients and care partners in a way that facilitates patient acceptance to take-home naloxone being part of their chronic pain treatment plan.

Please see Important Safety Information and full Prescribing Information.

Educational Objectives

After attending this symposium, participants should be better able to:

  • Identify patients at risk for an opioid overdose.
  • Facilitate brief and impactful conversations with patients and care partners around risk of opioid overdose and the need for take-home naloxone.
  • Implement strategies to incorporate communication about opioid overdose and take-home naloxone into clinical protocols when prescribing opioids.
