AAPM is excited to spotlight Dr. Kara Segna, as our January 2025 member focus.

Dr. Kara Segna, a dedicated faculty member in the Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine division at Johns Hopkins, embodies the personalized care that defines modern pain medicine. As Co-Chair of AAPM’s Acute Pain Special Interest Group (SIG) and a Co-Chair of the Scientific Abstract Committee, Dr. Segna is passionate about advancing the field and fostering collaboration among clinicians.

“Pain is personal and complex, and so is the way we treat it,” she shares. “It is crucial to understand each patient’s unique situation and tailor a management plan that provides relief and healing during one of the most difficult times in one’s life.”

Beyond her professional dedication, Dr. Segna finds balance in her personal life. After a busy day in the operating room, she picks up her 3-year-old daughter from daycare, conveniently located within the hospital. Together, they enjoy a heartwarming ritual: exploring new neighborhoods on their commute home, marveling at the season’s most beautiful Christmas light displays.

Dr. Segna’s work and approach to life remind us of the importance of empathy, creativity, and balance in caring for others and ourselves. AAPM is proud to have her as a member and leader, shaping the future of pain medicine.

Nominate a fellow AAPM member who exemplifies our mission to advance multidisciplinary pain care innovation, education, advocacy, and research by completing the nomination form here.
