AAPM is proud to spotlight Dr. Nathaniel Schuster as our April Member Focus, a nationally recognized leader in pain medicine and neurology, and current Treasurer of the Academy. Through his clinical leadership, research contributions, and service to AAPM, Dr. Schuster continues to shape the future of pain care.

Dr. Schuster is a Professor and Medical Director at the UC San Diego Center for Pain Medicine, where he specializes in pain and headache disorders. His work sits at the intersection of neurology, interventional pain medicine, and emerging therapies, bringing a multidisciplinary, evidence-based approach to complex pain conditions.
A clinician-scientist, Dr. Schuster has led numerous clinical trials and research initiatives exploring innovative treatments for pain, including neuromodulation, cannabinoids, and novel pharmacologic therapies. His work has contributed to a deeper understanding of migraine, neuropathic pain, and patient-centered outcomes, with findings presented nationally and published extensively across leading journals in pain medicine and neurology.
His leadership extends beyond the clinic and research space. Within AAPM, Dr. Schuster serves on the Board of Directors and Finance Committee, helping guide the Academy’s strategic priorities and long-term sustainability. He is also actively involved in national and international societies, contributing to guideline development, education, and multidisciplinary collaboration across the field.
Dr. Schuster’s contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including the 2025 Harold G. Wolff Lecture Award from the American Headache Society and the 2025 Rollin “Mac” Gallagher Pain Medicine Journal Award from AAPM. He has also been named a “Top Doctor” by San Diego Magazine and continues to be an invited speaker at major national and global conferences.
