The AAPM Member Focus nominee for September 2023 is Theresa “Tracey” Mallick-Searle, MS, PMGT-BC, ANP-BC.
Ms. Mallick-Searle is a nurse practitioner in the Division of Pain Medicine at Stanford Health Care. She has 27 years of experience at Stanford Health Care and completed her graduate studies at the University of California, San Francisco.
In 2018, she founded the “APRNs/PAs in Pain Medicine SIG” at AAPM and served as its first co-chair. She also initiated the annual inaugural APP track at the AAPM national conference in 2021, acting as the education committee chair and lecturer.
A bulk of her current practice revolves around evaluating and treating acute and chronic pain conditions in hospital and outpatient settings. A specific area of focus within the Division of Pain Medicine is the diagnosis and management of chronic headaches. Additionally, she is an expert in pain during pregnancy, resulting in the recent publication of her book “Holistic Pain Management in Pregnancy”.
She lectures on pain management topics both within and outside the region with contributions to the field evidenced by her articles, abstracts, and book chapters on pain assessment and management.
At Stanford University and Medical Center, she is currently engaged in several research and education projects, notably the PROMPT trial, focusing on motivational counseling for surgical patients. She completed a pilot study “Educating APRNs and PAs in Pain Management: A Needs Assessment”, and presented her findings at the American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM) Annual Conference Virtual, Apr 23 – 25, 2021.
In addition to AAPM, she is a member of The American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the California Association of Nurse Practitioners. She also contributes to the editorial advisory board of Practical Pain Management and writes for the Advanced Practice Provider. Her roles have included co-chair positions at AANP’s pain management group and the aforementioned APRN/PA special interest group at AAPM.
Throughout her career, she received numerous peer-nominated awards including the Nurse Practitioner of the Year (Pain Medicine) by Point of Care Network in 2019, 2021 & 2022, and Advanced Practice Provider of the Year by Stanford Health Care in 2015.
In addition to her clinical work at Stanford Health Care, Ms Mallick-Searle joined the Interdisciplinary Practice Committee as its first Nurse Practitioner member, and through that involvement became the first co-chair and founding member of the now “APP Shared Leadership Council”, setting the groundwork for the “Center of Advanced Practice” (Welcome to the Center for Advanced Practice!
