AAPM is excited to spotlight Dr. David Copenhaver, as our March 2025 member focus.

AAPM is proud to spotlight Dr. David Copenhaver, a distinguished leader in pain medicine, whose dedication to advancing cancer pain management and supportive care has made a significant impact on the field.

Dr. Copenhaver serves as a Professor, Division Chief, and Vice Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at UC Davis. He is the founding member of the Cancer Pain and Supportive Care program, demonstrating his commitment to improving the lives of patients facing complex pain challenges. Recognized for his contributions to pain education, he received the Presidential Commendation for Cancer Pain Education from AAPM in 2024.

As an anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist, Dr. Copenhaver has extensive expertise in diagnosing and managing complex pain conditions, including cancer pain, craniofacial pain, and complex regional pain syndrome. His practice integrates advanced techniques, such as neuromodulation and intrathecal drug delivery, to optimize patient outcomes.

Dr. Copenhaver is a prolific author, contributing to numerous book chapters and publications. He serves as the editor of Bonica’s Pain Management, the internationally recognized textbook for pain medicine. Additionally, he plays an active role in AAPM, serving on the Annual Meeting Planning Committee and as Chair of the Cancer Pain Special Interest Group (SIG).
