The AAPM Member Focus nominee for October 2024 is Meredith Barad, MD.

Dr. Barad is a Clinical Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine at Stanford University and a board-certified neurologist with a subspecialty in headache and pain medicine. Her primary focus is assisting patients with head and facial pain. She has co-directed the Stanford Orofacial Pain Program and played a key role in creating a cross-disciplinary headache center. Additionally, she serves as Program Director for the Pain Fellowship at Stanford.

Dr. Barad is deeply involved with AAPM, serving as co-chair for PainConnect 2025, AAPM’s annual meeting, and chairing the Headache and Facial Pain Special Interest Group (SIG). She also co-edits the headache and facial pain section of the Pain Medicine Journal, contributing her expertise to the field.

Originally from Colorado, Dr. Barad completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Texas, Austin, and earned her medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine. After completing her Neurology residency and Pain Medicine fellowship at Stanford, she pursued a two-year research fellowship in Dr. Sean Mackey’s lab, focusing on neuroimaging and pain. Her research utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study brain activation in chronic pain patients and to help them modify both brain activity and pain experiences.

Dr. Barad’s contributions to pain medicine, particularly in head and facial pain, have made a significant impact on patient care, research, and education at Stanford and within the broader pain medicine community.
