Our Mission

The mission of the American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM) Foundation is to eliminate pain as a significant public health issue by advancing provider education, supporting groundbreaking research, and ensuring patient access to individualized, comprehensive, and evidence-based pain care.

In collaboration with other leading organizations, the Foundation aims to bolster AAPM’s core goal: optimizing the health of patients in pain and eradicating pain as a major health problem through the advancement of pain medicine and access for all.

Research Initiatives & Projects

Current Projects:

  • Topical Analgesics for Neuropathic Pain – The AAPM Foundation is developing a topical analgesic guideline to bolster neuropathic pain management. This project involves a thorough review of existing literature, extensive consultations with experts, and the creation of an evidence-based clinical guideline. Once the guideline is finalized and rigorously validated, it will be submitted to the esteemed Pain Medicine Journal for peer review. Following this, it will be disseminated to clinicians and patients through various channels, and CME education. The overarching objective of this endeavor is to advance pain management practices and significantly improve patient outcomes.
  • FDA Guidelines for Management of Acute Low Back Pain

AAPMF Leadership

President – Antje Barreveld, MD

Antje M. Barreveld, MD, is the Medical Director of the Pain Management Services and co-founder and Director of Education and Outreach for the Substance Use Services (SUS). She is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Tufts University School of Medicine and an Anesthesiologist with Commonwealth Anesthesia Associates at Newton-Wellesley Hospital since 2012.

Treasurer – Marsha Stanton, PhD, RN

Marsha Stanton, PhD, RN, is President of the International Health Facility Diversion Association. She is a registered nurse with a PhD in Health Services Administration and Education.

Director – Jeremy Adler, DMSc, PA-C

PA Adler was one of the first PAs nationally to practice in specialty pain management and is a co-owner at Pacific Pain Medicine. He is a Founder’s Society member of the American Academy of Pain Medicine Foundation.

Director – Shravani Durbhakula, MD, MPH, MBA

Shravani Durbhakula, MD, MPH, MBA is Anesthesiologist and Pain Physician at Vanderbilt University. She is the creator of Pain Rounds and the host of the Pain Matters Podcast.

Director – Trent Emerick, MD, MBA

Trent Emerick, MD, MBA, is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine and Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Medicine. He is also the Associate Chief of the Chronic Pain Division in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine and Program Director for the UPMC Pain Medicine Fellowship.

Director – Wesley Gilliam, PhD, LP

Wesley P. Gilliam, Ph.D., L.P., is a board-certified clinical health psychologist in Mayo Clinic’s Department of Psychiatry and Psychology and an assistant professor of psychology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. He is the clinical director of Mayo Clinic’s Adult Interdisciplinary Pain Rehabilitation Center program.

Director – W. Michael Hooten, MD

W. Michael Hooten, M.D. is a past president of the American Academy of Pain Medicine. Dr. Hooten is a professor of anesthesiology in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.

Director – Bryan Marascalchi, MD

Bryan Marascalchi, MD, is a clinician education and innovator with national and international recognition for his biodesign work within the domains of anesthesiology and pain management. He is an Assistant Professor at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

Director – Brian Mayrsohn, MD, MS

Brian Mayrsohn, MD, MS is the founder of Maywell Health, a hybrid pain medicine and musculoskeletal health healthcare delivery platform. He also leads the Innovation Challenge at the American Academy of Pain Medicine.

Director – Theresa Mallick-Searle, MS, PMGT-BC, ANP-BC

Theresa is an Adult Nurse Practitioner in the Division of Pain Medicine at Stanford Health Care in California. She along with Jeremy Adler started the APRN/PA SIG at AAPM and launched the first APP educational track at the National Conference.

Director – Danielle Sarno, MD

Dr. Danielle Sarno is an Instructor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School, Chair of the Wellness Committee in the Department of Neurosurgery, and Co-Director of the Harvard Interventional Pain Simulation Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Director – Mark Wallace, MD

Mark Wallace, MD, is a board-certified anesthesiologist and pain management specialist. He has served as the director of UC San Diego Health’s Center for Pain Medicine for 27 years. Dr. Wallace is a professor at UCSD School of Medicine and has authored numerous articles and books on pain medicine.
