The American Academy of Pain Medicine
The practice of pain medicine is multidisciplinary in approach, incorporating modalities from various specialties to ensure the comprehensive evaluation and treatment of the pain patient. AAPM members comprise a professional community of clinicians with a sustained interest in pain disorders and their management.
Founded in 1983, AAPM is the medical specialty society representing physicians and their team members practicing in the field of pain medicine. The Academy is involved in education, training, advocacy, and research in the specialty of pain medicine.
AAPM aims to be the recognized authority for appropriate and effective pain care through its knowledge, scholarship, and commitment. Propelled by members from all disciplines in pain, AAPM works to improve the study and treatment of pain.
AAPM’s Mission Statement
AAPM is dedicated to its mission of advancing and promoting the full spectrum of multidisciplinary pain care, education, advocacy, and research to improve function and quality of life for people in pain.
AAPM members come from all areas of pain medicine.
Members represent a variety of origins, including anesthesiology, internal medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, physiatry, psychiatry, psychology, and neuroscience. These topics are also represented across AAPM’s various committees and task forces, as well as AAPM’s shared interest groups.
As the field of pain medicine has grown, a defined body of knowledge and scope of practice have emerged, and today, pain medicine is acknowledged as a discrete discipline by the American Medical Association (AMA). AAPM is the first pain organization with representation in the AMA House of Delegates and AAPM’s advocacy efforts are a top priority for the organization.
