Medicare’s Searchable Physician Fee Schedule

Source: Emily Hill, PA, AAPM Coding Consultant

CMS will release in early November the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) and other policy changes effective for 2019. As the new fee schedule is released, practices will want to assess the impact of the changes to the practice and calculate co-payment amounts for Medicare beneficiaries.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Physician Fee Schedule Search Tool provides Medicare payment information on more than 10,000 services, including pricing, the associated Relative Value Units (RVUs), and various payment policies such as applicability of certain modifiers and physician supervision of diagnostic services.

The Search Tool allows you to customize your search by:

  • Pricing amounts
  • Various payment policy indicators
  • Relative Value Units (RVUs)
  • Geographic Practice Cost Indices (GPCIs)

The searchable MPFS is updated quarterly and is located at: www.cms.gov/apps/physician-fee-schedule/search/search-criteria.aspx. In addition to the search tool, you can download a Medicare Learning Network booklet that describes in detail how to use the search function. Now's the time to become familiar with this tool so that you can easily and quickly find 2019 MFPS information when it is released in the next few weeks.
