Beth Darnall, PhD
Beth Darnall, PhD.
Dr. Darnall is Director of the Stanford Pain Relief Innovations Lab. She leads NIH and PCORI-funded clinical trials that broadly investigate behavioral medicine for acute and chronic pain. She serves as faculty mentor. Her primary interests are developing and investigating novel pain treatments that are scalable, effective, and low burden. Darnall graduated from Texas Woman’s University with a B.A. in mass communications. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Colorado, Boulder and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in rehabilitation medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Darnall is the current Co-Chair of the 2022 Planning Committee.
Marie N. Hanna, MD
Marie N. Hanna, MD.
Dr. Hanna is an associate professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Hanna specializes in obstetric anesthesia, as well as regional and acute pain management. She serves as the director of the Acute Pain Service and the chief of the Division of Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Management. She earned her medical degree at Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt. She completed anesthesiology residencies at both the Loyola University School of Medicine and Cairo’s Coptic Hospital. She also completed an internal medicine internship at Metro West Medical Center in Framingham, Massachusetts, and served as a research assistant at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Hanna is the current Co-Chair of the 2022 Planning Committee.
Salman Hirani, MD
Salman Hirani, MD
Dr. Hirani is a physician entrepreneur and health disparities researcher, specializing in cancer pain medicine and interventional spine procedures. He specializes in the minimally invasive treatment of the spine and various musculoskeletal disorders causing chronic pain. Dr. Hirani’s background includes health services research, medical technologies and innovation, diversity, equity, and inclusion, healthcare leadership, public health, and academic advising. Dr. Hirani completed his preliminary training in Internal Medicine at Harvard Medical School-Mt Auburn Hospital, followed by residency in Rehabilitation Medicine at The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr. Hirani then went on to complete his training in Pain Medicine at MD Anderson Cancer Center. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Johns Hopkins University and earned his MD with Distinction in Research from UT Southwestern Medical School. Dr. Hirani is the current Co-Chair of the 2022 Planning Committee.
Raj Moman, MD
Raj Moman, MD
Dr. Moman, studies chronic pain and treatments of chronic pain at Mayo. He studies the prevalence of chronic pain in different patient populations. In addition, he has an interest in treatments of failed back surgery syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, spinal stenosis, and complex regional pain syndrome. He has research interests in outcomes related to chronic pain therapies such as spinal cord stimulation and studies patient-specific factors that limit access to and efficacy of well-established therapies for chronic pain. He has an interest in the use of technology in pain medicine and how it can help patients better manage their chronic pain. He earned his BS in Biology from Florida State University, his MA in Medical Sciences from Boston University and his MD at Mayo Clinic School of Medicine. Dr. Moman is a member of the 2022 Planning Committee.
Meredith Adams, MD
Meredith Adams, MD
Dr. Adams is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Wake Forest Baptist Health and the only NIH funded researcher board certified in Anesthesiology, Pain Medicine, and Clinical Informatics. She is currently funded by the NIH National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (K08) to study opioid response phenotypes for people with low back pain through the Mentored Clinician Scientist program, a member of the Pain Mechanisms Lab at the Wake Forest School of Medicine, and both teaches and practices clinical pain medicine at Wake Forest Baptist. She serves as the pain editor for OpenAnesthesia.org. Her research interests are novel approaches to pain education and pain biomedical informatics. She earned a BA from Tulane University, her MS from the University of Florida, and MD from the Tulane School of Medicine. Dr. Adams is a member of the 2022 Planning Committee.
Jeremy Adler, DMSc, PAC
Jeremy Adler, DMSc, PAC
Dr. Adler has practiced the specialty of pain medicine for over 20 years. He is a partner, Chief Operating Officer, and provider at Pacific Pain Medicine Consultants. He graduated from the University of California at San Diego, earned a PA degree at SUNY Stony Brook, a Master of PA Studies from University of Nebraska Medical Center and a Doctor of Medical Science from the university of Lynchburg. Dr. Adler is a member of the 2022 Planning Committee.
Meredith Barad, MD
Meredith Barad, MD
Dr. Barad is a Clinical Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine as well as a Clinical Associate Professor of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford Hospital and Clinics. She is a board-certified Neurologist, Headache and Pain Physician. Her primary focus is in helping patients with head and facial pain. Dr. Barad received her undergraduate degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and earned her medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Barad is a member of the 2022 Planning Committee.
Lynn Kohan, MD
Lynn Kohan, MD
Dr. Kohan is a board-certified Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at the University of Virginia. She earned her medical degree, obtained a master’s degree in physiology and biophysics as well as completing her anesthesia residency at Georgetown University. Dr. Kohan completed her pain medicine fellowship at the University of Virginia. She is currently a faculty member and serves at the Pain Medicine Fellowship Program Director. Dr. Kohan is a member of the 2022 Planning Committee.
Sean Mackey, MD
Sean Mackey, MD, PhD
Dr. Mackey is a physician-scientist focused on pain, neuroscience, outcomes, and policy research psychophysics, public health, health policy, patient outcomes and medical education. Dr. Mackey is Redlich Professor and Chief of the Division of Stanford Pain Medicine. He earned a B.S.E. and M.S.E from the University of Pennsylvania and received his M.D. and PhD. from the University of Arizona. He is board certified in anesthesia and pain management from the American Board of Anesthesiology. Dr. Mackey is a member of the 2022 Planning Committee.
Zachary McCormick, MD

Dr. McCormick is a board-certified specialist in both Pain Medicine and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) and is an Associate Professor, Chief of Spine and Musculoskeletal Medicine, University of Utah, PM&R. He earned his B.S. in Neurology and Neurosciences from Haverford College. He received his MD at the University of Pennsylvania and completed his residency and fellowship at Northwestern University’s Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. He serves at the Deputy Editor in Chief for the journal Pain Medicine. Dr. McCormick is a member of the 2022 Planning Committee.
Traci Speed, MD
Traci Speed, MD
Dr. Speed is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences with Johns Hopkins Medicine. She is a psychiatrist in Baltimore, Maryland and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area including Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. She has over fourteen years of experience. Her specialties include Emergency Medicine, Neurology, Psychiatry, and Behavioral Sciences. She graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and is certified in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Speed is a member of the 2022 Planning Committee.
Hassan Rayaz, MD
Hassan Rayaz, MD
Dr. Rayaz is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. His area of clinical expertise is acute pain management, enhanced recovery after surgery and regional anesthesiology. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, his MD from University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and stayed on to complete his residency in anesthesiology. He completed his fellowship in Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain at Yale University. Dr. Rayaz is a member of the 2022 Planning Committee.
Rosanne Sheinberg, MD
Rosanne Sheinberg, MD
Dr. Sheinberg is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her areas of clinical expertise include anesthesiology and cardiac anesthesia. She is also board certified in integrative medicine and is investigating holistic approaches to improving perioperative satisfaction and outcomes. She received her undergraduate degree in biochemistry from the University of California, Davis. She earned her MD from Johns Hopkins. Dr. Sheinberg then completed her residency and a fellowship in cardiothoracic anesthesiology at the Johns Hopkins hospital before joining their faculty ten years ago. Dr. Sheinberg is a member of the 2022 Planning Committee.

Dr. Le-Short is currently the Pain Medicine Fellowship Program Director and Chair of the Graduate Medical Education Committee as well as Assistant Professor at MD Cancer Center in the Division of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston TX. She earned her BS in Anthropology from the Newcomb College of Tulane University as well as her MD from the Tulane University School of Medicine. She is certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. Dr. Le-Short is a member of the 2022 Planning Committee.
