AAPM Foundation

AAPM Foundation Advances Pain Medicine Education and Research

Since 2011, the AAPM Foundation has worked in conjunction with the American Academy of Pain Medicine to provide innovative and wide-reaching educational programs that improve patient outcomes, elevate standards of implementation in the treatment of pain, and fund research to advance the field.

The Foundation envisions access to optimal pain care that improves the functionality and quality of life for patients with pain, significantly mitigating the widespread problem of pain in the United States. These efforts, in concert with other leading organizations, will lead to promoting quality pain education and training for all physicians, conducting research into the causes and treatment of pain conditions and disease, and supporting best practices to optimize patient outcomes and ensure a comprehensive, integrated, and coordinated system of care.

AAPM Foundation Initiatives

The AAPM Foundation is committed to promoting education to a variety of audiences to achieve maximum impact on the field of pain medicine. The AAPM Foundation’s initiatives recognize the urgent educational priorities of emphasizing patient safety, improving the treatment of pain, educating physicians on new technologies, and understanding best practice methodologies throughout the pain medicine continuum.

Ethics

Medical Ethics in the Practice of Pain Medicine

AAPM endorses the American Medical Association’s Code of Medical Ethics, which guides physicians to meet the ethical challenges of medical practice.

Interactions with Companies

AAPM has signed onto the Council of Medical Specialty Societies’ Code for Interactions with Companies. The purpose of the code is to guide societies in the development of policies and procedures that safeguard the independence of their programs, policies, and advocacy positions.

Accordingly, members of the AAPM Board disclose potential industry and financial conflicts of interest annually and when material changes occur and are expected to rescue themselves from discussions for which they may have a conflict. Further, leaders are asked to divest themselves of any direct financial relationships with industry from the time they take office as president-elect through their term as immediate past president.

Commercial Support

As an ACCME-accredited provider, AAPM follows a policy for all of its commercially supported projects that states that the Academy must make all decisions regarding the disposition and disbursement of the commercial support and ensure that activity planning and implementation are made free of the control of any commercial interest.

AAPM Advocacy Efforts

Affecting Health Care on Behalf of our Specialty and Patients

AAPM supports pain patients and pain medicine clinicians by advocating for a balanced approach to safe and effective pain treatment. AAPM works to influence legislators, payors, and others in a position to set policies that impact patients. The Academy recognizes the need for policies that support effective control of drug abuse without harming the appropriate treatment of pain and works with members and other pain societies to establish programs and to educate public along those lines. AAPM members are sought-after opinion leaders who serve on many key national coalitions and federal agency workgroups.

AMA House of Delegates

AAPM holds a seat in the American Medical Association House of Delegates (HOD) and speaks for its members concerning issues critical to their pain practices. Read about AAPM’s AMA activities.

Representation in the HOD is apportioned to medical specialty societies based on the portion of its physician members who also maintains AMA membership. Because you and your peers have joined AMA, your voice is being heard.

If you are not one currently, we encourage you to become an AMA member.

Multisociety Pain Workgroup

AAPM participates in the Multisociety Pain Workgroup, a coalition of medical specialty societies that collectively advocates for continued coverage of important pain treatment options. Collectively, MPW societies represent 100,000 members dedicated in whole or in part to pain management.

National Pain Strategy

AAPM supports the National Pain Strategy (NPS), developed by the US Department of Health and Human Services, which many AAPM leaders helped to shape. AAPM believes that successful implementation of the strategic goals in the NPS will create the cultural transformation of pain prevention, care, and education desperately needed for the American public.
